T2: Writing a German-English translation under exam conditions, followed by a correction workshop based on the translations, which have been checked and graded by the instructor, who highlights the errors but does not correct them. Also, a set of assignments to be completed: e.g. creating wordfields using matching articles that deal with current events and reviews of new films or books; doing regular translations of self-selected texts together with a partner; correcting each other's exam translations.
Two of the six exam texts in any semester deal with current events in the English-speaking world. The other four are general-language texts taken from German reviews of new English-langauge films or books. By using "matching" English articles on the same news item or English reviews of the same film or book, students deal primarily with language in context and learn to avoid the pitfalls of translating mainly from a bilingual dictionary.
