This seminar will explore and investigate how British film has taken part in re-negotiating British identity in the aftermath of Thatcherism. Among the topics discussed will be the examination of working class identity in an age of de-industrialisation, renegotiations of gender and sexual relations, multiculturalism and racism in British society, youth identity and sports, and regional identities (Scottish, Welsh). Among the films under discussion will be Brassed Off (1994), The Full Monty (1997), Billy Elliot (2000), Trainspotting (1996), Twin Town (1997), Ae Fond Kiss (2004), Bend it like Beckham (2002), Purely Belter (2000) and This is England (2007).
