Kursbeschreibung / -kommentar

This course is designed to familiarise students with the major literary and cultural texts of the Irish tradition in their historical and socio-political context. While the course maintains a clear focus on Anglo-Irish authors and texts, we will also consider examples of the celtic oral tradition as well as materials in the native Irish tongue (largely in translation). Apart from poetry, narrative and drama, the course will also make cursory inroads into the spheres of music and film. Through the surveying of major literary and cultural texts, the course will also provide helpful insights into aspects of Irish history and politics as well as address important questions and issues dominant in Irish cultural discourse.
