Kursbeschreibung / -kommentar

The course is now taught in English in the summer semester. It was taught in the past in German under the name "Wohlfahrtsmessung". It examines two main areas of welfare measurement: (a) income inequality and poverty and (b) life satifaction as an alternative indicator for utility. The course uses almost exlusively empirical papers (written in English) used in measuring welfare. Students are required to read, understand and interpret empirical papers with respect to the determinants of welfare. Students critically assess the underlying assumptions of the various models used in their interpretations. The final exam is set in English but can be written in English or German. The course is open to Masters/Diplom students.
