This lecture will provide an overview of prominent trends in American literature and culture from the beginnings to more recent developments in the twentieth and twenty-first century. It will present and examine the prominent discourses of the various periods (revolutionary period, civil war, roaring twenties etc.) and will relate them to their social, political, and cultural contexts, addressing key issues of class, ethnicity, and gender. The lecture will focus its investigation of the period's chief cultural and literary paradigms by discussing in exemplary fashion some of its most influential texts and authors.
