German Politics and Culture

Mr. Held is a great instructor with an evident passion for the practice of teaching as well as the content covered in the course. A high degree of organization, including a transparent grading scheme and the involvement of several online media, helped the student to maintain an overview of all kinds of assignments. Mr. Held was always accessible to students and his youthful and uncomplicated attitude created a friendly environment enabling interesting in-class discussions. Finally, his expertise in the Social Sciences is beyond question and the number of comparisons he could draw to other fields and sciences was impressive. I highly recommend this class to anyone who would like to learn something about a broad range of topics, reaching from social psychology over German history to basic economics. It will be a lot of work but it won't be one of these courses that leave you wondering why you took it or what you had actually learned.

A really enjoyable class even for students from engineering/science majors. The subjects discussed were interesting and relevant in the current economical and political situation.
The professor was active, encouraged discussions and put a lot of energy into teaching this class.
The technological means were also quite nice, using dropbox, turnitin, google sites, made resource searching and assignment submission easier.
All in all, a terrific course to take.

Ich habe den Kurs "German Politics and culture" im Wintersemester 2011 besucht und war mit diesem Kurs äußerst zufrieden. Der Kurs handelt hauptsächlich (wie der Name schon sagt) mit deutscher Kultur(-geschichte) kombiniert mit social sciences.
Herr Held hat meiner Auffassung nach immer fair und neutral Noten vergeben, wobei die Notenvergabe bei Ihm nicht im Vordergrund steht; der Hauptfokus liegt er darauf, dass man etwas mit nach Hause nimmt aus dem Kurs. Material war ebenfalls gut ausgewählt auch wenn es anfangs hart ist sich damit zu beschäftigen, denn ich wusste nicht viel über socail theories vor diesem Kurs.
Der Spaß und das Interesse war auf jeden Fall gegeben, was zum einen auch an Herren Held lockerer und aufgeschlossener Art im und außerhalb des Unterrichtes liegt. Herr Held legt viel Wert auf technische Hilfsmitter (eigene Homepage des Kurses, essays online einhänden + korrektur, Beamereinsatz).
Im gesamten kann ich den Kurs, sowie Herren Held, nur weiterempfehlen, ich würde ihn jeder Zeit wieder belegen!

Dr. Held has proven to be very energetic and he has put a lot of effort into teaching. Very enthusiastic about everything and it was really worth attending the lecture.
