The course focuses on the German-to-English translation of current news articles that deal with events in the English-speaking world. Students become familiar with the typical features of journalese through the intensive reading of German and English articles covering the same stories, and become adept at using these "matching articles" to translate German news stories accurately and idiomatically. Along the way, they learn a great deal about the way each language works - e.g. in the areas of terminology, vocabulary, collocations, idioms, register, syntax, tenses, reported speech, spelling and punctuation - and how to negotiate even very tricky differences between the two languages.
